How to avoid burnout as a coach

Here’s something nobody tells you when you start coaching:

Your clients’ results are not your results.

I know it feels good when a client hits a PR, finally loses those 20 pounds or texts you a transformation photo.

But here’s where it gets dangerous.

You start needing those wins. You start measuring your worth by their scale. And when someone quits even for reasons that have nothing to do with you, it’s tough.

This may not seem like a big deal, but this is how burnout starts. Not from too many clients but from too much of yourself wrapped up in outcomes you can’t control.

The separation to learn

Your job is to show up prepared. To care. To coach well.

Their job is to do the work. To stay consistent. To make choices when you’re not watching.

You can do everything right and still have a client quit.

This is the business and it’s important to understand that when a client quits, that’s not your failure. That’s the nature of coaching.

What actually keeps clients around

Client retention is key. It’s good for business. It’s good for clients mentally and physically and it’s good for the sense of achievement that we get from helping other achieve their goals.

So, what actually keeps clients around? It’s not the perfect program. It’s the relationship. The check-ins. The sense that there’s always a next chapter with you.

Clients leave when they feel like the story is over

So keep writing new chapters with them. New goals. New challenges. New reasons to stay.

A small shift

This week, notice when you’re taking credit for wins that aren’t yours.

Then notice when you’re taking blame for losses that aren’t yours either.

Focus on writing new chapters and let the losses go quickly and effortlessly.

No need to extend energy on an outcome you can’t completely control.

A quick win in the first week builds more trust than a perfect program

Here’s something that took me years to learn: Your client doesn’t need the perfect 12-week program on day one. They need to feel like they made a good decision hiring you. That happens fast. Or it doesn’t happen at all. The first week matters more than week six When someone signs up with you, they’re […]

How to increase revenue per client by pricing for outcomes vs. hours

You know what you’re worth. That’s not the issue. The issue is you’re still pricing like everyone else. When you worked at a gym, someone else decided your hourly rate. You showed up, trained clients, got paid. Simple. But now you’re running a business. And that’s a completely different game. Here’s the shift most coaches […]
